November 2006 And the Training Begins!
Exciting news! Things are finally happening with the Bayaka Fund, and the first phase has been set in motion. The dream of this project has always been to be able to give the gift of health to the Bayaka people. What has always been important to me was to give a gift that never ends. Medicines run out, but knowledge does not. That is why the first phase of the Bayaka Fund was education. Julles, a faithful African man who loves the Pygmies and is loved by them, just finished a month of training at the hospital in Yaloke, CAR (Central Africa Republic). He was instructed in first-aid and how to administer some of the basic medications to be given in the village. The ultimate goal is for him to be the “medicine man” for the village. Medications are being purchased, and Julles is to be in charge of the village “pharmacy” and the administration of meds. In January he and Missambo Laurent are going back to Yaloke for more training. Soon he and up to 3 Pygmies will go through more training as they prepare themselves to deal with the basic ailments of pneumonia, malaria, and parasitic infections.

May 2005 Back to Africa!
At the end of his third year of medical school, Justin went back to Africa to the country of Chad. On a medical missions trip, sponsored by Grace Brethren International Missions, he worked side-by-side with a surgeon and an obstetrician/gynecologist performing life-altering and life-saving surgeries at an African Mission hospital. Although this time was not easy, Justin felt a calling to the surgical field and plans on pursuing surgery as his career.

September 2004 Another school explores Jonathan’s Jungle
Once again I was able to speak to a new group of kids. This time they were from Bethlehem, PA. The Jonathan’s Jungle presentation was given to 1st through 3rd grade and then an additional presentation, by special request, was given to the middle school. They were able to get a chance to see real photographs of the Bayaka people in action. We discussed in great length why we are so lucky to have the simple things in life like running water and easy access to food. I saw a lot of intelligent and enthusiastic kids. Best Wishes to all of them!

June 2004 Show and Tell gone Good!
This month I was sent a letter from a 3rd grade class from Penn Mont Academy in Hollidaysburg, PA. It seems a student had taken a copy of Jonathan’s Jungle in for show and tell because the class had been studying Africa. The awesome class of 3rd graders got together as a group and raised money for the Bayaka. It’s amazing to see the hearts of children reach out to others.

April 2004 Welcome to the Jungle!!!!
Sewell School, an elementary school in New Jersey, invited me to talk to all the first graders. A first grade student had taken a copy of the book in for show and tell and the teacher sent a note home with the student asking how they could get me to give a talk about the Bayaka. I was contacted and had so much fun talking to them. I showed them the real life pictures of the jungle and the Bayaka people. It was very interactive and they had some really interesting questions. After the presentation, I signed books for the kids. Below are some fun photos of the day taken by Amy Marcello.
